This information has been distributed to the press as a service to the UK’s transgender community.
For those who have been upset and outraged by the Daily Mail’s treatment of Lucy Meadows, a candle-lit vigil will be held outside the offices of the Daily Mail today at 6.30pm.
Lucy Meadows was a transwoman and teacher at St Mary Magdalen’s school in Accrington. The school were very supportive of her transition but after calls from a minority of parents, a number of highly sensational news reports followed. This was crowned by a highly offensive and transphobic piece by Richard Littlejohn in the Daily Mail suggesting that Ms Meadows was in the wrong job. Reports of her death were confirmed last week: though cause of death remains unknown, coverage of Lucy’s story has continued to be peppered with inaccuracy and abuse by much of the national media.
This is a low-key event, called spontaneously as a mark of respect to a brave woman and dedicated teacher.
Those calling it have also suggested it is to show the Daily Mail that transphobia is utterly unacceptable, reprehensible and has tragic consequences.
