Exmoor Bah T’at

I grew up, politically, in the Liberal Party of Jeremy Thorpe, still yearning, as many of us did in the 70’s, for the radicalism of Jo Grimmond.

He was an “interesting” leader – Thorpe, that is. most persistent memories of the man were, however, the fact that he gave birth to an irreverent ditty sung regularly at the Glee Club after party conference.

I repeat it here, for those who were of that time and who will, i hope, understand that this is genuine memory-jerker and not posthumous jibe.

(Ilkla’ Moor Bah T’at)

Wheear ‘as tha been sin’ ah saw thee?
On Exmoor Moor Bah T’at.
Wheear ‘as tha been sin’ ah saw thee?
Wheear ‘as tha been sin’ ah saw thee?

Chorus:
On Exmoor moor bah t’at
On Exmoor moor baht’at
On Exmoor moor bah t’at

Tha’s been a-courting Norman Scott

Tha’s going to get th’ sel’ foun’ out

Then we shall ‘ave to hoosh it oop

Then we shall ‘av to raise the cash

Then we shall ‘av to shoot the dog

Then we shall all be oop in court

Then we shall all get off scot-free

The we will try for Amnesty
